The day I told myself, \u201cAlright\u2014time to do proper city riding,\u201d I hopped on my Monkey 125.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small. Cute. Obviously born for fun rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only problem?
The more fun it is, the more \u201coops\u201d moments<\/strong> a beginner collects. \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what\u2019s extra annoying is that my \u201coops\u201d moments always show up with perfectly dramatic timing<\/strong>:
right behind a car, at a red light, on an uphill, with people watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s like the road is an exam\u2026
and the Monkey is the proctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1) \u201cStopped\u2026 but still in 2nd gear?\u201d \u2014 The 2nd-gear start that instantly dies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I stopped neatly, perfect distance behind the car in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay\u2026 I\u2019m getting good,\u201d my brain said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I realized\u2014
I was still in 2nd gear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classic beginner logic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can do this\u2026 you can<\/em> start in 2nd\u2026 right? (maybe?)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I slowly released the clutch, added a tiny bit of throttle\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vrrr\u2026 tsk.<\/em>
Dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The silence after that? Brutal.
Suddenly everything feels slow-motion in the middle of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car in front is already gone.
The car behind me is radiating that \u201cUh\u2026 hello?\u201d pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there I am, talking to myself inside my helmet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAh\u2026 it was 2nd gear\u2026 sorry, Monkey\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Monkey stays quiet.
But when I restart, it\u2019s like it\u2019s saying, \u201cOkay. Try again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson of the day:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • When you stop, check: 1st gear<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • As a beginner, don\u2019t \u201cmaybe it\u2019ll work.\u201d Do the sure thing: 1st-gear start.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    \n\n\n\n

    2) 3rd \u2192 2nd downshift, then \u201cJERK!\u201d (even my heart downshifted)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m cruising, chill, enjoying the wind.
    Then the car ahead slows down a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cOkay, engine brake\u2026 3rd to 2nd\u2026 should be smooth\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I downshift\u2014
    but my clutch release was awkward,
    my throttle didn\u2019t match,
    and my speed was higher than I thought\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    JERK. THUD.<\/strong>
    The Monkey basically reacts like: \u201cHuh? What are we doing today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That\u2019s when I realized:
    Downshifting isn\u2019t just \u201cgoing down a gear.\u201d
    It\u2019s a dance<\/strong>. Timing. Rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Beginner downshift energy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Me: \u201c2nd gear, let\u2019s go!\u201d
    Monkey: \u201cHold on\u2014your RPMs don\u2019t match!\u201d
    Then it answers with its whole body: \u201cJERK.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lesson of the day:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Downshift = clutch timing + road speed + engine RPM<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Rush it, and the Monkey will complain\u2026 in body-language form \ud83d\ude05<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      \n\n\n\n

      3) Stop on an uphill, then start again: \u201cWhy are you HERE, uphill?!\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      This is the boss level: stop on an incline\u2026 then take off again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As a beginner, your brain feels like it lags for two seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I stopped uphill, distance was fine, everything looked okay.
      Time to go again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Slow clutch release, a little throttle\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Vroom\u2026 vroom\u2026 tsk.<\/em>
      Dead again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      More embarrassing than flat ground\u2014because uphill adds the extra fear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWhat if I roll back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      So your whole body goes tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Restart attempt, panic thoughts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cAm I being too gentle with the clutch?\u201d
      \u201cAm I not giving enough gas?\u201d
      \u201cOr\u2026 is my Monkey trolling me now?\u201d \ud83d\ude2d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But honestly, the Monkey is kind of smart\u2014before it gets worse, it gives you that little warning tsk<\/em> first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Like it\u2019s saying:
      \u201cThis is where you need a more confident clutch\u2026 and a bit more throttle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Uphill start: find the biting point \/ friction zone<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Throttle: not the \u201ctiny bit because I\u2019m scared\u201d\u2014the amount you actually need<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Beginner priority: calm first<\/strong>, not perfect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        4) Why do my mistakes still somehow feel \u201cfun\u201d on the Monkey?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Let\u2019s be real: stalling is embarrassing.
        Jerky shifts hurt your ego.
        Uphill? Instant sweat mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        But the Monkey 125 is weird in the best way\u2014
        because it still makes me laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        It\u2019s light, honest, and gives super clear feedback.
        My mistakes don\u2019t become \u201ctrauma.\u201d They become mini-lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        And the Monkey feels like it has a face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
